Montagu Blues Vs KYPC Galaxy
Pin Point Junior Recruitment Challenge Shield 1st Round
11.15am
Galaxy made the trip to face a side they have never faced before and a side in a league below them as we took on Montagu Blues in the Challenge Shield. Galaxy had a fully fit squad to choose and made a few changes from last week’s game and started with Jamie in goal, the back three consisted of Jordan Elliott and James, the midfield was packed full of talent with Sam and Dean on the wings and Scott and Ethan taken centre stage with Callum up front, this left Luke, Jake and Dominic chomping at the bit to get on from the side-lines.
The game was under way in the glorious sunshine and it was Montagu on top as they created the 1st few chances but couldn’t find the back of the Galaxy goal. Galaxy looked to get the ball rolling along the ground but couldn’t find their rhythm as Montagu got in our faces and looked up for this game. After a few dangerous attacks from Montagu it was the turn of Galaxy as their first real chance came from Ethan with a 20 yard effort from outside of the box which was saved well from their keeper. The Galaxy defence under constant pressure early on kept strong and with some important blocks from James and some great play down the flanks from Elliott and Jordan it was a surprise long ball over the top from Jamie in goal which sent Callum 1 on 1 and with only the keeper to beat he lobbed the ball into the top right hand corner 1-0 Galaxy. This seemed to calm the nerves of the Galaxy players and this followed with 3 subs with Dominic entering the field in place of Callum and Luke coming on in his unusual place of right wing for Dean and Jake slotting into centre midfield for Ethan. Just before the end of the 1st half Luke broke free after a world class through ball from Sam who switched the ball from left to right through the middle of the Montagu defence but Luke just couldn’t find the target and shot wide, 1-0 half time.
Galaxy given a stern talking to at half time and told they were in a real good old fashioned cup game here were sent out looking to get the next goal and secure their place in the next round of the Shield. It wasn’t to be that way though as Montagu again came firing out the traps testing Jamie out in goal but he was never under real threat. Scott was starting to get his foot on the ball and feed the wingers down the flanks and Jake was battling away and letting everyone know he was there every time they took a touch on the ball. Striker Dominic holding the play up allowing the Galaxy midfield to bomb forward and help out in attack came close again through Dean as he raced past the left back but their keeper saved well again. With 10 minutes left Montagu got the goal they fully deserved with a goal mouth scramble they managed to prod the ball home from 6 yards and set up a real test of character from this Galaxy side, 1-1. This got Galaxy going as minutes later Sam was put clear and used his strength to hold of the Montagu defender and coolly slotted the ball into the bottom left hand corner and send the Galaxy fans in uproar, massive sigh of relief 2-1 Galaxy. It wasn’t over yet as Galaxy raced clear again as Ethan was set up from a Dean through ball which left him in acres of space inside the box and fired home to make the result more comfortable with only minutes remaining, 3-1 full time.
Montagu will feel very unlucky with the result of the game as their performance fully deserved a lot more and the 3-1 score line flattered Galaxy as it was a much tougher game than a 3-1 score line suggests. Montagu made the game a proper cup tie and it was a classic game of two sides from different divisions going head to head and the under dogs given the favourites a big scare. Saying this Galaxy grounded out the result which is very pleasing and this was the main thing and full credit goes to all 12 lads who stepped foot on the pitch today as they could have easily lost their heads and on another day lost this game.
